Outreach

We support Grassroots of Howard County

Sue Bell Council Chair

St. Paul's Volunteers - You Make a Difference!

Grassroots of Howard County held an appreciation luncheon for volunteers on March 14, 2024.  The theme of the luncheon was "You Make a Difference to Us."  Sue Bell (chairperson of Social Outreach) and Janet Jew (volunteer) represented St. Paul's Lutheran Church. St. Paul's provides lunches at the Jessup Grassroots Day Resource Center the third Saturday of even numbered months.

Dr. Mariana Izraelson, Executive Director of Grassroots, served as master of ceremonies and provided Grassroots' statistics from 2023:

  • over 3,000 individual walk-in services provided
  • over 200 homeless clients received services
  • over 7,500 calls for aid
  • over 1,000 users of the Day Resource Center
  • over $600,000 in cash donations that gets applied directly to goods and services for our fellow citizens
  • over 600 people providing over 8,800 hours of volunteer service in support of our county's neediest.

Dr. Calvin Ball, County Executive, thanked volunteers for their efforts to provide hope and a helping hand for the less fortunate members of the Howard County community. Several other county council members expressed thanks for the hours provided by the volunteers and one client gave heartfelt thanks for the Grassroots support he has received over the years.  He said Grassroots saved his life.

While Sue and Janet accepted the certificate of appreciation, the thanks are extended to all of our congregation who provided funds, made cards for Grassroots clients, decorated eggs, made cookies or favors, washed dishes, and shopped for, cooked, delivered or served meals. The collective effort is a great help to our less fortunate neighbors and "You make a Difference."

Upcoming Grassroots meals:

Saturday, April 20, 2024 - thanks to all the volunteers who have signed up to help!

Saturday, June 15. 2024 - Volunteers are needed to help prep and serve the meal. Please email Sue if you're interested in helping (sue@stpaulslutheran.info)

Jesus in the Garden of Gethsemane

Our altar window above

"Then Jesus went with them to a place called Gethsemane, and he said to his disciples, “Sit here, while I go over there and pray.” And taking with him Peter and the two sons of Zebedee, he began to be sorrowful and troubled. Then he said to them, “My soul is very sorrowful, even to death; remain here, and watch with me.” And going a little farther he fell on his face and prayed, saying, “My Father, if it be possible, let this cup pass from me; nevertheless, not as I will, but as you will.” And he came to the disciples and found them sleeping. And he said to Peter, “So, could you not watch with me one hour? Watch and pray that you may not enter into temptation. The spirit indeed is willing, but the flesh is weak.” Again, for the second time, he went away and prayed, “My Father, if this cannot pass unless I drink it, your will be done.” And again he came and found them sleeping, for their eyes were heavy. So, leaving them again, he went away and prayed for the third time, saying the same words again. Then he came to the disciples and said to them, “Sleep and take your rest later on. See, the hour is at hand, and the Son of Man is betrayed into the hands of sinners. Rise, let us be going; see, my betrayer is at hand."

Matthew 26:36-56
